Pumpkin Guts Decoration

It's that spooky time of year again, and you know what that means - time for me to get overly fixated on my Halloween decorations! This year, I decided to really go all out and create something that would stop passersby in their tracks. I wanted to take the classic element of pumpkin guts and blow it up to epic proportions. After lots of planning, experimenting, and a whole lot of spray foam, my vision of our house covered in pumpkin innards became a gross reality.

Pumpkin guts are iconic but not something I've ever seen championed for Halloween. Once I had my sketches and plans in place, I set to work.

Here’s how I built it

I made everything you see here. The saw was a variety of materials including corrugated plastic and a baseboard trim which was cut and spray-painted silver. The scoop was a repurposed wheelbarrow and a PVC pipe. I used expanding spray foam over chicken wire mounted to a piece of plywood. And the ropes, oh man did I do a lot with those ropes. I still get nightmares about painstakingly removing over 250ft of green threads embedded into the thick climbing rope.

All the hard work was absolutely worth it when I got to finally step on the sidewalk and see it in its entirety. The looks on my neighbors' faces as they walked by were priceless. A woman who saw me installing it earlier came back in the evening with her husband just to get another look. They shared stories about how their kids used to love playing in the pumpkin guts during carving time. And the ultimate seal of approval? Watching a little girl ride by on her bike, her mouth agape in pure wonder.

Seeing that same joy and awe from two different generations really made all the hard work feel worthwhile. It takes creativity, determination, and some guts to bring a little magic and nostalgia to the whole community.

Special thanks to my wife, Gwen, and the kids for helping me paint and supporting my crazy creation. Also special thanks to Tim Gallenbeck and my neighbor Bill for helping me get the monstrosity on my roof.
