Driving to work one morning I heard a woman on NPR telling her life story. Her husband passed away suddenly and she was compelled to do something to dull the pain. What did she do? She moved into the American Gothic home and started making pies. She found comfort in the pies. She felt joy when she would give them away. She opened her kitchen, taught others to bake and to heal. Needless to say I was moved by her story. I set to work to develop her a logo.

This is the final logo. The painting ‘American Gothic’ is famous because of the juxtaposition of the quintessential farmer and a gothic window. I played with that concept. The pie in the windowsill was it. Simple, yes, but all good logos are simple. Colors were pulled from the painting.

Unfortunately this logo never saw the light of day. The woman moved out of the house and started traveling the world making pies. I still had fun creating it.
